Dream catchers, also known as "sacred hoops" in Native American culture were used to protect sleeping children from bad dreams and nightmares. It is believed that the night contains dreams, both good and bad. So the dream catcher when placed in the morning light, is intended to catch the bad dreams in it's web like center.
